P-51D, P-38 Lightning (complete) and Spitfire (new project) - February 21, 2020

Hello everyone. It's me Antony, back with another Blog while we are discovering new things in 2020. And nothing like a good Blog to entertain you.

For this Blog, I'm going to talk about new adjustments of the P-51D Mustang, the P-38 Lightning and a new project I started recently: Supermarine Spitfire.

Let me show you the new renders of the P-51 Mustang:

Looking good. The Mustang received a new pair of navigation lights and a pair of bombs. In addition, I attached the aircraft to the Armature after appending it from the P-38 project. It has the propeller spinning animation, which will save me from hard work. But still, I have to make more animations for the P-51 Mustang.

Now, the P-38 Lightning. It is fully rigged and has other animations like: landing gear retracting during flight and landing, canopy hatch opening/closing, neutral pose, flight pose and land pose. Yet, I have to make the animations for the Fowler flaps, but the flight control components like the ailerons, rudders and elevator has no animation. Since a portion of my idea of creating the P-38 is to make a mini-game inspired in War Thunder, IL-2 Sturmovik and other aircraft simulators, these components will be animated on Unity.

Let me show you what I did so far:

After concluding this aircraft, I tried to animate it with Curve Path on Blender. But, since I had no idea in how to do that and my brother don't use it, we tried to add Follow Path on Rigging Modifiers. Then we found out on YouTube in how to make objects to follow paths.

Strangely, the black background from the decals appeared after the initial renders. Maybe it was because from the Follow Path that kinda messed up. Also, my brother installed Blender 2.82, but it didn't influenced this issue. Since I tried on the original file for the P-38, I tried again without saving the main file and following the tutorial on YouTube. It resulted fairly nice and the black BG remained transparent.

Amazing, huh? Now the next thing to do is correcting the textures for the P-38. But I plan to do that in the future.

Now to conclude this Blog, my recent project on Blender: the Supermarine Spitfire. The model selected is the Mk. IX of the British aircraft, but I have interest of making the Mk. I and Mk. V. Okay, here's the renders of the current version of the project:

Yeah, I decided to start making the Spitfire while working on the P-51 Mustang and Bf 109. But then, when it comes to single-engine aircraft, the only small difference is the model while the aerodynamic and components remain the same. That means I can reuse the main armature for different single-engine aircraft like the Spitfire, Hurricane, Typhoon, Tempest, P-51 Mustang, P-40 Warhawk, P-47 Thunderbolt, Curtiss O-52 Owl, BF 109, FW 190, TA 152, DO 335 (despite it has two engines but its model is a single-engine aircraft and its second engine is located on its tail), Mitsubishi A6M 'Zero', Dewoitine D.520, Macchi C.202 Folgore, Macchi C.205 Veltro, Fiat G.55 Centauro, Yakovlev Yak 9, MiG-3, Lavochkin La-7 and so go on. Bombers and twin-engine aircraft requires a considerable number of bones for animating extra components.

It's looking good so far. I plan to add more components on the Spitfire and make its texture. One thing my brother told me while I was asking how to apply asymmetrical textures is: some artists apply the Mirror on the model and applying the texture on the desired edges, faces and vertices to defy the symmetry. It will also help me in case I'll make Clare with Irene's arm. But that will be for another Blog.

That's it for today. I hope you enjoy it. I'll be back with more Blogs in this year. I plan to share more artworks and other things I did in my time. Until the time comes, you will be surprised to see it. See you next time.
