New updates for: La-5 / La-5FN and B-17G - March 27, 2023
Hello everyone. It's me Antony, back with another Blog here to start 2023.
I recently learned the town hall is calling more approved candidates from the selective process exam for the attendant vacancy to work at the public health center. At least this is good news as my former employers informed me they will resume the calling. As far I remember, the other candidates in front of me in the classification are from other cities and some may be employed - which will speed up the calling to reach me. Until then, let's wait.
I'm not sure I'll continue my studies for the civil service exam scheduled on May of 7th of this year. I haven't paid my subscription and in case I want to perform it, I have the deadline to April 6th before it expires and my subscription cancelled. And I'm still waiting to be called to work as a teacher by the Government's selective process I assigned for a while. Both are great in case I'd receive some payment for my services and skills.
Putting my personal news aside, let's go to the important thing here in this Blog. For today, I'm going to bring new images of the Lavochkin La-5 and La-5FN and the Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress.
Lavochkin La-5:
Looks good after a good time without visiting my aircraft projects. Reminder: William advised me to lower the light intensity and change the angles. So, don't mind about it.
What changed was: I added some edging slats by extracting a piece from the La-5 wings, changed the material for the fuselage's section where the exhaustion outlets are located and concluded its tail landing gear.
Another change to the aircraft was the decals for the respective variants of the La-5, like the La-5F and La-5FN. I'll show you.

The La-5FN (original model) |
Although it looks small, the La-5F main decal has the F (or Ph) from the Cyrillic alphabet in a styled way. The FN from the La-5FN has the sharp lines inside of a diamond / square.
Interesting fact: I learned the F stands for Forsirovanniy (Форсированный - Boosted or improved), and the FN stands for Forsirovanniy Neposredstvenniy (Форсированный Непосредственный - Boosted Direct). In mechanical aspects the La-5F had the improved version of the Shvetsov ASh-82 radial engine: the M-82F; and the La-5FN had the M-82FN engine, upgraded with a direct fuel injection system.
After these renders, I decided it was time to texture the aircraft before rigging it.
The La-5 is using the Nodes arrangement I adapted from my ground vehicles after the help of my brother. One thing I want to highlight is: I used several layers / canvas and folders on Gimp to make the wings texture, especially some canvas with strategic sections painted in black, set on Erase mode. The idea is to use two fully painted canvas, with one of them inside of a folder along the mask canvas.

The results were good, but I noticed the green spots were inverted with the dark gray after I made the fuselage's texture. For that I changed the canvas. Another thing about the masks is the wearing marks around the plane's surface. Some areas present a wood surface while others present a metallic surface. As far I remember, a considerable number of Soviet planes were built in wood with few parts being made of steel or aluminum.
The only thing I missed was the metallic appearance on the engine exhaustion section. Probably I may change it after this Blog. Regardless, this Soviet air fighter is looking good in these colors.
Lavochkin La-5FN:
The La-5FN was a bit troublesome to find the proper colors while testing it on Gimp. But I finally found out one that caught my attention and interest. The red color remained the same for the plane during its development.
When I unwrapped its UV mapping, the fuselage from both models are different. I tried to move the mapping from the La-5FN to fit with the La-5's, but I think I'll have to rework its texture on Gimp - especially the mask canvas.
After these renders, I appended the Armature from the Focke-Wulf FW 190's files to rig this Soviet plane. Excluding the Spitfire, the Bf 109, the Reggiane planes (precisely the Re.2005) and some other planes, the majority of planes has the same landing gear setting (the base being located a little in the middle of the wing instead to the plane's center).
Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress:
The B-17 received a rework on its top and ball turret. After my last Blog (New updates for: B-17G, A6M 'Zero' and Hurricane Mk I - November 27, 2022) where I showed you the ball turret being reworked, I finally concluded it. Taking the moment, I decided to search for some photos of the top turret in order to remake it. Then I finally made it.
I'll show you a brief comparison of these two components.

Amazing, huh? I hope you like it.
After these reworks, the last thing to do is making its interior, rigging this American bomber and texturing it. Also, the Browning machine guns on the fuselage's section requires completion before I conclude this project. I had plans to talk more of the flaps and the landing gear, but I didn't paid enough attention - being reserved for the rigging procedure.
Well, that's it for now my friends. I hope you enjoy this Blog. In case I have some spare time to enjoy, I'll be working on other things aside from Blender projects and my personal things. Until the time comes, you will be surprised to see them. See you next time.
