Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress (new project)
Hello everyone. It's me Antony, back with another Blog during this quarantine phase while the World makes their best to find a (possible) cure for the COVID-19 pandemic. And nothing like a good Blog to entertain you.
For this Blog, I'm going to show a new project I started recently - focused on WW2 aircraft. The aircraft of choice is the American Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. In case you don't know what it is, the B-17 is the famous heavy bomber developed and built by Boeing Company (though other companies received orders to built American aircraft to increase production and avoid losing time with that specific company, like Lockheed, Douglas, Martin and Bell. For the B-17, Lockheed and Douglas helped Boeing by the shared orders to build more units for the U.S.A.F - United States Air Force). It received the nickname Flying Fortress due to its incredible toughness and for some bombers returning from their mission with a lot of scratches, bullet holes, some parts missing or destroyed. It was well armored and well armed with a considerable number of Browning M2 / .50 caliber machine gun, but even these characteristics required extra protection from the escorting fighters like P-51 Mustang.
I picked up the G version of the B-17 to make on Blender. Different versions can have slight differences like the gun set-up and models for the targeting glass. At the beginning of the project, it proved to be challenging than my previous projects, simply because it is a heavy bomber and not a fighter. Unlike the P-38 Lightning, Bf 109, P-51 Mustang and Spitfire, I'm not sure I'll make the internal components like the navigation panel, yoke and other instruments. But it will receive a plane with particle system to make the bomber releasing its load of bombs.
For the rendered images, I'll share them to you.
What I did was: I made the main structure of the aircraft, the wings, the rudder, the ball-turret under the fuselage and engines. I appended the Browning machine guns from the P-38 Lightning project for the tail-turret and ball-turret. It's looking good, despite the wings were a bit large from the front to the back side. I tried my best to adjust it for the next renders.
Let me show the new renders of B-17 Flying Fortress.
Amazing. Now the engines has the propellers, the main structure has a temporary texture with one my metal colors, the windows received a glass texture and some parts received a metal texture. I made the elevator, a radar and radio antenna for the aircraft. For the upcoming components, I'll make the cabin, an adjustment on the targeting glass, wings and elevator, add more machine guns and extra components.
After the B-17, the next aircraft for the bombers collection is the B-29 Superfortress - also developed and built by Boeing and some of the famous B-29s are Enola Gay and Bockscar (the ones who dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki), Fifi and Doc (the last two B-29 remain in flight condition); Heinkel He 111, Heinkel He 177 Greif (Griffin), Junkers Ju 87 Stuka, Ju 88, Ju 188, Avro Lancaster, Arado Ar 234 Blitz (Lightning), Mitsubishi G4M 'Betty', Consolidated B-24 Liberator, North American B-25 Mitchell and others that fought in WW2.
Well, that's it for today. I hope you enjoy it. I'll be back with more Blogs in this year. I plan to share more artworks and other things I did in my time. Until the time comes, you will be surprised to see it. See you next time.
